About us FAQ

At present, there are no laws in place which state that jewellery appraisers must possess certain licensing or qualification requirements, in order to practise as a Valuer. However, as a consumer, it is in your best interest to select a Valuer who you can trust and who holds relevant qualifications, certifications and expert knowledge.

Do your research before selecting a jewellery Valuer, and make sure you ask many questions if you are uncertain. Of primary importance is finding someone who is independent, unbiased and has no affiliations with insurance companies, banks or jewelers. That will ensure the fairest and most accurate and objective valuation.

It is also highly recommended that individuals select a Registered Jewellery Valuer with the National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NCJV), as all members must pledge to ongoing professional development to hold onto their membership.

Look for Valuers with the following skills, qualifications and experience:

  • NCJV membership. You can verify this by asking to see a current membership certificate.
  • Most jewellery Valuers will have a NCJV sticker in their front window to indicate their affiliation with the organization
  • Anyone with a degree or diploma in gemmology or by the gemmological Association of Australia (GAA). This qualification provides assurance that the individual can identify and grade gem materials.
  • Diamond Technologist (GAA)
  • Background knowledge of the jewellery and watches sector.
  • Have a current Practicing Certificate;

JVL are proud to provide the above mentioned services and more. Offering flexibility and convenience to their clients, all valuations are performed according to the Uniform Standards of the National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NCJV).
In order to obtain the most accurate valuation of your item, you should only use a Registered Jewellery Valuer, with the National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NCJV). The jewellery valuation process can be quite technical and scientific and requires the valuer to accurately identify gemstones and metals, as well as provide a comprehensive description of their dimensions, weights, and quality.
These duties should be performed with someone who has extensive product knowledge and has undergone formal training in gemology and diamond grading/technology.
An independent valuation is an evaluation performed by a registered valuer who is not engaged in buying or selling jewellery and has no stake in the grading or purchase price of stone or article of jewellery. The appraisal is a document stating the approximate value of an item. using current market data to establish the appraisal to calculate a coverage rate.
A valuation is a document that evaluates the quality characteristics of a stone or article of jewellery and determines the value. Even if your diamond has a grading report, many insurance companies require an independent valuation to establish coverage for your item of Jewellery.

A thorough, independent valuation strengthens confidence in your purchase by reconfirming the identity and grading of the diamond, gemstone, or finished piece of jewellery, and establishing the value.
